The fusible link is the fire-safety device on a solvent parts washer. It is a soldered fitting that holds the lid open; if the temperature in the tank rises to the link’s rating, the solder melts, the link parts, and the lid drops to smother the fire. It works whether or not anyone is standing there.
Fusible links are consumable. Replace one that has been triggered, painted over, corroded or physically damaged — a link that cannot part is a lid that cannot close. This is a low-cost item protecting a tank of flammable liquid, so it is worth checking during routine maintenance rather than after an incident.
