How each one works

Solvent parts washers

A solvent washer uses a petroleum-based or synthetic solvent to dissolve grease, oil, tar, and carbon. Parts come out fast-drying and rust-free with no rinse step, which is why solvent is the go-to for heavy oil and greasy work.

Aqueous parts washers

An aqueous washer uses a water-based detergent solution, usually with heat and agitation, to lift a broad range of soils — oils, greases, carbon, metal fines, coolant films, and particulate. It’s low-VOC and generally the more environmentally friendly, worker-safe option.

When solvent is the right call

  • You clean heavy grease, oil, tar, or baked-on carbon.
  • You need parts dry and rust-free immediately, with no rinse.
  • Your parts are water-sensitive or prone to flash rust.

Tip: the old knock on solvent — ongoing solvent cost and disposal — largely goes away when you pair the washer with a solvent recycler and reuse your solvent on-site.

When aqueous is the right call

  • You’re under VOC limits or want the lower-emissions option.
  • You clean a mix of soils, including particulate and water-soluble residues.
  • Worker safety and regulatory compliance are priorities.
  • You run high volume and want the lowest long-term operating cost.

Neither is universally better. Solvent excels at heavy oil and grease with fast, rinse-free drying; aqueous handles a broader mix of soils with lower VOCs and often lower operating cost. Match it to your parts and regulations.
Do aqueous parts washers cause rust?
They can leave parts wet, so ferrous parts may flash-rust without a rinse and rust inhibitor. Proper chemistry and drying prevent it. Solvent cleaning avoids this because parts dry rust-free.
Is solvent parts cleaning being phased out?
Some regions restrict certain solvents due to VOCs, but solvent washing remains widely used — especially paired with a recycler to minimize new solvent and waste. Check your local rules.
Which is cheaper to run?
